Water Aid Australia also campaign’s locally and internationally to change policies and practices and ensure that water and sanitation’s vital role in reducing poverty is recognized.
Clean water is an essential element for the survival of human kind. One in eight people around the globe do not have access to it. Due to lack of clean water and sanitation 2 million people die annually. Another factor which affects people lives is that even if clean water is available, it is not available near the homes of people thus making their lives difficult. Women and children in developing countries spend hours everyday walking miles just to collect clean drinking water. Diarrhoea is a disease which claims the lives of 4000 children everyday.
These children die because they don’t have adequate sanitation and drinking water. The distressing things about these deaths are that these are common diseases which are preventable. Where safe and clean toilets are not available and so people are exposed to diseases.
In many places, there are no latrines and women must wait till the dark to go to the toilet or they must walk long distances to find a spot where no one else is present. Where toilets are not present girls are prevented from going to school. Water Aid Australia also teaches people about the importance of safe water and abandoning unhygienic practices. This helps people to become healthy and live in a clean environment. Water Aid and its partners work with individuals and families in their communities and use a mixture of low-cost technologies to provide clean water and sanitation and hygiene solutions.
