AUSTRALIAN CONSERVATION FUND(ACF)

The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) is an organisation which is committed to inspiring all people pf Australia to achieve a healthy environment for all Australians. For over 40 years the voice of Australian Conservation Fund has been a strong voice for the environment, promoting solutions through research, consultation, education and partnerships. The Australian Conservation Fund  work’s with the community, business and government to protect, restore and sustain the Australian environment. The founders of Australian Conservation Fund were drawn from Australia’s scientific, public service, business and political decision makers. In 1970 there was a campaign to protect the large areas of the Mallee in Victoria. It was resolved in favour of the conservation. In 1972 the remote Lake Pedder in Tasmania was obliterated by a hydroelectric scheme. A group of ACF members, who were angered by the failure of the organisation to speak without fear or favour in opposition to the flooding of Lake Pedder worked to bring about internal change. The approach of the Australian Conservation Fund  to conservation campaigning became more strategic, active and independent and throughout the seventies public awareness of conservation issues increased.

The nineties began on a high note for the ACF. The environment being the focus of the federal election, ACF was swamped by the media with requests for information to produce TV programs, newspaper feature articles and radio documentaries related to environment. On World Environment Day 1990 Australian Conservation Fund and Telecom Australia held a nationwide video-conference for young people throughout the country to discuss ways in which ozone-depleting substances could be rduced. Then in 1993 the recession hit and attention of the media turned away from the topic of environment. Despite financial constraints, the  Australian Conservation Fund continued to extend its influence through initiatives such as the Green Jobs Unit, which promoted employment creating environmental solutions; the alliance with the National Farmers Federation, which was renewed in 1996 and again in 2000; and the establishment of the GeneEthics Network to focus on the impact of genetic engineering.

In 2000, Sir William Deane, the Governor General of Australia, ACF’s program Natural Advantage: A Blueprint for a Sustainable Australia. The Australain Conservation Fund has a number of publications to it names which tell people about topics such as climate change, nuclear freeenvironment, sustainable cities, green homes, healthy rivers, oceans and a healthy Australia. The works of Australia Conservation Fund have touched peoples lives  in the far off corners of Australia.
